5 Things I'm Excited About/And Other Ramblings

Hello, again. Ahh the not-so-tranquil back to school time. In my mix of confused emotions I have to pump out a 7 page paper on the history if Paris that I have been steadfastly avoiding. I figure if I get myself writing one thing I can jump to the other with little fuss. Here goes.

So what the Hades does back to school time mean anyway-aside from the obvious. I really have confronted this phenomenon for the past ten years and each time I have approached it differently every year. Sometimes with unwavering optimism and sometimes with “Aw, Shit”. Currently I’m just scoffing at the prospect and mouthing whatever when people ask me if I’m excited. Maybe when I finish my AP Euro paper I will be in a better mood but I doubt it. I do like school but more for the intellectual stimulation then anything. Btw, I have no idea where this blog post is going I just thought I should post something. For once I really have no opinions on anything because I have just been sitting in front of a computer for a week. I’m not so upset about summer ending me being more of a winter person anyway. Oh and in terms of my career crisis I have given up on forensic science simply because it is way more boring in real life than Abby Suito ever is. I have re opened my doors to medicine (something I have previously eliminated because it requires loads of memorization) but more on that later. For now a LIST!!

5 Things I’m excited about this fall

5) Halloween: It is and always has been one of my favorite holidays. Free Candy, the chance to dress crazy with no repercussions, and the night of the living dead? Bring it!
4) Ap Euro: Alas finally a class I am truly interested in! The work load is going to be intense but at least I will have a reason to stay awake.

3) The Vogue September issues: since I stated following fashion everything I have been into the year before has magically end up on their “Hot New Trends” page. It’s EPIC! I wonder if it will happen for, like, the fourth time in a row.

2) No longer being a freshman: I was not nearly as bad as everyone said it was going to be but I still kind of sucked. Your social learning curve has to be higher than Everest, so it’s a blessing that it’s finally over.

1) Castle: This summer TV season was barely watchable and dreadfully bland. I need some Nathan Filllion in my life! And this quirky replacement for Pushing Daisies (I my heart that is) might just do the trick.

So this just basically sums up how boring my life is right now. Tell me what you’re looking forward too! I hope it’s more interesting than mine!

Am I the Last Surviving Romantic?

No, seriously. I believe In love so strongly that If someone else doubts It for a second I make it my personal mission to make them feel and believe in it again. The idea that two people can find each other and fall deeply in love and be completely happy together for the rest of their lives is a fast fading notion. The idea’s of love from people I know range anywhere from: Someday my prince will come to marriages should be arranged.
But this while idea of the perfect couple is a myth isn’t without cause. Any piece of media that depicts a “fairy tale” romance is pegged as childish or for women (usually single naive/in denial young women). Like the Romantic Comedy is commonly called the “chick-flick” and romance novels are pegged ad not true literature. The worst thing of all is when people become genuinely surprised when couples have been together for double digits.
How can something so fundamental as love have become a faultless game of hit and miss that is just a game? I don’t get it-I just don’t get it.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blooded Attempt At A Good Film

When one walks into the new installment of a series they- weather they or the filmmakers like it or not- got in with a certain set of expectations. You expect it to be similar to the previous films with the same themes and the characters you know and love, you expect the art, costumes and special effects to be well done, the acting to be suitable and, the script to be adequate, and you expect the directing to be above average, and it to be worth your twelve dollars; most of all you expect it to be good. Not Oscar worthy, but watchable enough to be worth your two hours and a week’s worth of conversation. No matter how hard it tried HP 6 was none of these things.
Movies are rarely as good as their books, but few fail so boldly as Harry Potter without, seemingly, even trying. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is a completely standalone film from the rest of the franchise and completely derailed the darker ambiance the movies seems to be slipping into. It was a bright, chipper, and completely random film that seemed like a sister to the ‘Harry Potter’ adventures. (example). It starts out rough, with Harry reading The Daily Prophet in a muggle diner and flirting with a waitress, and then Dumbledore shows up to whisk him off to a random village where they recruit a arm chair as the new potions master, and it rarely gets better from there. It had more awkward moments then a Sacha Baron Cohen film (and arguably more eyebrow raises), and it unsuccessfully tried to be a poignant teen romance film, butinstead fell flat. One of the most frustrating things is that it had this almost there air about it, like every mishap or poorly delivered line was just a speed bump and the movie could only get better from there; I had this feeling until the credits rolled and I sat their staring at the screen in puzzled stupor trying to summon words to say to my companions.
With 652 pages of sublime source material and umpteen amazing actors its hard to imagine how the movie could have gone so horribly off course. It focused- a little more than it should have- on the three main characters and ignored the 15 other supporting characters who make the story what it really is. The three main actors still seem ‘one dimension short of three dimensional’, and they come off shallow and transparent. Its common since that huge chunks of books will be missing from movies but huge chunks of other movies in the franchise, that was just one of the many things that made my hair frizz. Example: WTF, happened to the Order of the Phoenix? So, Tonks and Lupin are married now? That blonde woman with Malfoy is his mom, right? The Weasly twins now have a joke shop?.I could go on and on. They assume you have read the books, allowing them to skip “trivial”conversations and reiterate points that a 10 year old could assume. (Ron’s girlfriend is a psycho- hose beast- WE GET IT) They also deliberately left some of the most phenomenal actors in their ensemble cast, with one line (or less) and then they pop up out of know where. Hagrid, Wormtail, Neville, Lupin and Tonks, Madame Pomfrey, combined had 11 lines. Luscious Malfoy, Mad-eye Moody and the Minstery of Magic were completely absent from the film. I’m glad that Bellatrix, Draco Malfoy and Ginny finally had the chance to expand on their characters but they were too little too late to resurrect this catastrophe. The directing was frustrating, but you could tell that the film was overwhelmed, and needed a life raft. The editing, and cinematography were good, but there were too many sexual double entendres for me to really say anything nice about the writing. (sorry, guys).
This movie had the means and potential to be great, and it will remain one of life’s great mysteries as to how it ended up the way it did. I, a loyal Harry Potter fan since day 1 will still turn out to see the next two in the franchise, though my eyebrows will probably be raised for a week in confused shock, and I may start a riot if the next one embodies the phrase mediocrity as completely as this one did. . You get a A for effort I suppose, but get to work on impressing me (and half the world) next time. Best of Luck, and nice try.

Coldplay: Gods Doesn't Even Begin to Cover It

I saw Coldplay last night and it was the one (if not) the greatest experience of my life. I had like a cosmic mind meld with the band and I was on such a sensory overload I could have done that forever. They have been my favorite band since I was in like the 4th grade and the last time I saw them was nothing short of horrible( for me- the band was still amazing). So when my mom sprung surprise tickets on me and my friend I was STOKED. I jumped up and down started screaming and everything. Several outfit changes and 24 hours later I was walking into the Home Depot Center for one epic Evening.

The Concert it’s self was amazing. I felt like I was one with them and the concert and I achieved like Zen while I was there. I am still in shock and at a loss for words a day later. They played all my favorite songs (save 2, which they came back on for an encore and did) and I was singing (shamelessly) at the top of my lungs to every song. (They had a random moment where they sang Billy Jean, an improvised love letter to LA,and the drummer (who is quite good) sang, in the audience.) Our seats were great (aside from the pot heads behind us) and I was in awe when they walked right by us. My faveorite moment is hard to pin point because the whole thing was a life time faveorite moment, but it has to be when they shot confetti into the audience during Lovers in Japan (i have a whole bag full of saved confetti), when the ran right by us, or when they sang The Scientist (my personal faveorite song). My least faveorite moment had to be sitting in the three hour gridlock to get their but IT WAS ALL WORTH IT. Being so close to Chris Martin didn't help my Hero-worship/crush but I suppose that comes with the territory. AHHHHHHOMGITWASSOMINDBLOWING. I uploaded all my videos and pictures so you can vicariously live through me. I will not-cannot- write a review for this concert because that would be doing it a disservice saying it can in fact be reviewed. It was just too amazing. 10 bazillion golden feathers out of 5.

Posative Energy and Lipstick Pt. 1

"...all she needs to focus is postive energy and lipstick,"- Mrs. Sakallah (math teacher) on Kye

This comment was made about-not to-me in math today, and it got me thinking. Why is it that I can focus on a 100 Question history exam or a 2 hour lecture on Radiocarbon, but not on a 5 question math quiz? I do have all the classic signs of ADD (it's just part of my charm) but it only seems to be active when ever I'm doing something i don't like-no matter how much I need/want to do it. Is it all in my head or is it actually a symptom. I thought it was my subconscious trying to piss me off, but it goes through phases so i don't think that's it either. Can the mind really control ADD? And if it can doesn't that nullify it as a concrete diagnosis? Long have scientists debated if ADD is an actual phenomenon or just a elaborate excuse for slacking- my theory? I think its a little bit of both. Also, positve energy and lipstick are helpful, but something I am interested in is key.

Kye’s Career Crisis: SVU

I suppose modern culture-or my own neurosis about long term planning for the future are to blame for my compulsive need to know where I’m headed in life- and at all times have a plan for it. This past year my chosen career has been everything from Botanist to Broadway producer, and as to be predicted, it has changed again! My paths in life seem to be on a running loop and about every three years I stumble upon something I previously ruled out, and fall in love with it again. About three years ago I stumbled upon Bones and decided immediately I wanted to be the next Kathy Riches, but I gave up on the anthropology part of Forensic Anthropology and have since decided that I love Forensic Science (again).

I have this not-so-weird quirk that my meticulously planned future has to be something that I LOVE and I freak out if I show any signs of working in an office. I know every little girl wants to be a princess/actress when they grow up and they usually end up being cubicle farmers or something but this is different. I’m determined to get what I want out of life- no exceptions. I just wish what I wanted did’t change so much. I also have a million interests that have to be in my life style so here is what my life is looking like 15 years from now (and I know we all get thrown road blocks and stuff but this is just a rough outline.)

I am a forensic scientist in the NYC crime lab who writes romance novels on the side and teaches Community Theater. I bake pies am obsessed with vintage fashion, and sing in an underground rock band. I may or may not drive a pink 50’s Thunderbird or Vespa Scooter. I also volunteer for various causes on the weekends.

That’s not too much right?

Why I Hate My Computer

Okay, so I got this Laptop two Christmases ago from my grandmother and it was all hunky dory for about 3 months until I realized that the massive appendage of a twelve hour battery sticking out the bottom of my computer didn’t have to be there. So I buy a new flat battery and get a recall notice on it that I ignore. And for the last year my computer hasn’t been able to hold a charge for more than a few hours and even then I have to sit in a really awkward position. In the past 6 months it has gotten so bad that I have spent over 500 dollars on replacement computer cords. So moral of the story children-DON’T BUY H.P.!! (and donate money toward the buy-me-a-new-computer fund).

SWAK, Kye

Taylor Takes on the Staples Center!!

A sold out Staples Center and thousands of screaming fan girls is what greeted Taylor Swift last night in her first major city of her first headlining tour. And she performed admirably because of it. Here is the rundown on her performance last night.

Opening Act (s)

  • I missed the first act because of traffic; I think it was called Gloryiana.

  • Kellie Picker was good, but it felt like she was trying to milk her own concert out her opening spot. She performed 8 or 9 songs and seemed to not really understand that fair few were actually there to see her. She was fun though and did an adequate job. When she talked though, it reminded me of a guy impersonating a girls voice (yes, it was that high pitched) mixed with pink frosting sprinkled doughnuts.

The Set

-It was awesome! Here's pic.

Taylor's Performance

-She seemed genuinely grateful that there was this many people here to see her- and completely overwhelmed. She played more than enough songs for us to get our money's worth; and had so many costume changes my head hurt. It was cute, fun, girly and perfectly suited to her; I got a little country for me at some points but it comes with the territory. She was having so much fun on stage that it was friggin' impossible not to have fun in the stands even if the girl next to you could scram it pitches only dogs could hear. She loved every second of it- so did I.

High Notes: The love story sequence with her dancers having a Elizabethan Ball and her uber-fast wedding dress change made the night for me, because I'm just as much of a romantic as she is. Also her dancers were absolutely beautiful!! John Meyers surprise performance (he's even cuter up close). Not to mention her outfits…

Low Notes: During Change it got a little too "God Bless America" for me. Kellie Picklers speaking voice. It was really cold outside.

Star Trek Fan..Or bona fide Trekkie?

Rundown: Well yesterday I saw Star Trek for the second time and quite frankly it only gets better the more you see it, way to go J.J Abrams! I am now officially a huge fan, but am I a trekkie? I don’t know. In the new film I was a huge fan of almost every actor/actress in it and J.J. Abrams before I saw it so when I saw it, naturally my mind was blown and I was an instant Star Trek fan. I also am a huge Science Fiction fan but for one reason or another I never really got into Star Trek, this being the only installment of the cult classic I’ve seen. So does that make me a trekkie or just a Star Trek Fan? We won’t know until the original series comes in the mail. Hum. Must ponder further.

Movie Facts: Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams, tells the story of the early life and carrier of the legendary U.S.S. Enterprise captain James T. Kirk (a shmexy Chris Pine) and how he came to know Spock (a super cute Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the Enterprise crew. Essentially it updates the beloved SciFi classic with younger more attractive actors and a back story.

Movie Fun: I’m going to marry Zachary Quinto and have an affair with Chris Pine, after I join Star Fleet.

WTF!?!: [SPOILER ALERT] As good as this movie is about incorporation all the quirks of the original series, there were a few glaring flaws. The first and most annoying for me was at one point of the film EVERY senior officer was dead, missing, or unable to do their job so we can cleverly slide in the replacements that we know so well. I found it a tad hard to believe that a massive ship with a crew of at least 800 would allow ALL of its replacement senior officers to be under 30. Chekov even proudly stated that he was 17. Abdthe best part- they were bossing people around that was twice their age. Also, why was Kirk getting beat up so much? Now, I get that it was part of character growth and all for him to learn to choose his battles but after like the third time he got his ass handed to him it just became annoying.

Acting: great! Not Oscar worthy, but according to people who are actually familiar with Star Trek most of them stuck pretty close to their original characters and did them justice accordingly. The cameo by Leonard Nimoy was brilliant. The one by Tyler Perry, not so much.

Arts: The music, special effects, and editing were all things I’ve come expect from J.J. Abrams, good, interesting, and well suited for the project. And I totally want one of those uniforms.

Bats Day at Disneyland 2009

As a loyal SoCal gal I go to Disneyland a lot. Over the years I have come on a day where it seems every Goth/scene/punk/Victorian has descended on the park by accident. Man, was I wrong. It is Bat’s Day where every Goth/scene/punk/Victorian has descended on the park- but definitely not by accident. Now I've always sort of sensed that this was organized but when I went today it was completely proven.

I was totally impressed by the devotion, style and sheer beauty of these people who clearly made their own costumes especially for this day. I love fashion and some outfits I really just needed to remember- but was far too nervous to go up to someone I had never met “Hey, can I take your picture?!”- So shortly after getting there I started taking candid pictures of people. After about an hour of this I started asking the more beautiful outfits if I could take their pictures. The sometimes awkward conversations went something like this. It’s been going ton for 10 years in fact, you can read more about it on the site below.

Me: “Hi, I'm a journalism/fashion student and I write a fashion blog. (Sort of true) You look soo lovely-may I take your picture?”

Them: Oh, really. Sure (picture taken) where do you study?

Me: (insert the first school that comes to mind and hope that they aren’t alumni)

Them: oh that’s cool…

Me: Well thanks! Have a nice day.

Them: You to (sweet smile)

I know a lot of Goth/scene/punk/Victorian people so I just thought of them as people in really nice outfits, but it was seriously entertaining to watch people who were genuinely frightened of them. Even the girl I was with was scared for a bit.

On Halloween once I went to Disneyland with myself dressed as an angel and my friend dressed as a Goth/scene kid devil. And they refused to let her through the gate-yup they actually refused to let her unless she changed. So I wonder what Disneyland feels about this. Hum. Must ponder further.

Anyway, here are my pics- some candid some not. Just marvel at their sheer awesomeness.

Kumar Kutner Kal goes to the White House

Let me start out by saying Mr. President, Kal this must work out-because you just killed my favorite character on House. Alas, Dr. Laurence Kutner is gone from our lives. He sadly committed suicide on the massive-shocker episode last night on House. Do you know why the writers of House offed Kutner? Kal Penn got a job with the Obama Administration.

His job was described to me as a liaison for the entertainment industry. His office, mere steps from the White House. I support Obama’s…and Kal decision. But why, why did you have to kill Kutner?

Kye vs. Dreamworks

I think my favorite part about this picture is how incredibly similar they look. Like, seriously, it is no stretch of the imagination to see Hugh Laurie as a mad scientist. (Of course, that’s kind of what House is…Hum. Must ponder further.)

My love for CGI Dreamworks films has fluctuated from non existence to must- have, though lately I’ve ignored there existence all together because of the 40 bazillion Shreak sequels (I still laugh at the first one every time). Anyway, Kung Fu Panda got me interested again, though the repetitive plot was slightly annoying, and my curiosity seriously dwindled after they announced Kung Fu 2. The Monsters vs. Aliens commercial looked cute with loveable characters, but if it lacks in plot I will be very upset. I wasn’t intending on seeing ,or paying any attention to it at all for that matter. But…..Look at that picture (and the rest of the all star comedic cast.) And Stephen Colbert voices The President. Nuff’ said.

Impress me Dreamworks. I have a rapidly-closing open mind to your films.

Hi Everyone!!

HEY! my name is Kye Siobhan I'm a teen aspiring writer. For a while I had free webs but maintain an entire website proved far too much effort- plus, I aspire to spend my time doing other things than updating a 5 page site. I can still find time to blog though, and since writing is my supreme passion in life, that is just what I’m here to do : ). Like my slightly scattered life (and my former blog on Webs) my posts can range from movie reviews to dating advice to comical commentary about life itself and everything in between! I'm so excited to start blogging! : D
